A New Year to Remember

BRINNON

The New Year started out peaceful and quiet for the Brinnon Fire Department. But the fates had other plans, after a quiet day relaxing and reminiscing about the year gone by the evening was thrown into turmoil by the sound of the fire tones signaling a confirmed, fully involved structure fire @ 3471 Duckabush Road.

When Fire Chief Bob Herbst and Engine 42 arrived on scene, they were faced with a 60 x 100 single story metal building, which housed a furniture finishing shop. Complete with paints, stains and a host of other chemicals. The building was full involved and at just that moment the roof collapsed venting the fire into the night sky. Engine 42 laid a supply line up the driveway and stretched a 2.5” attack line to protect the exposure on the B side, a complete cabinet shop. Lt Sue Fresonke manned this hose line in order to keep the fire from spreading from the building of origin.  Meanwhile Engine 41 provided a water pumping relay from the street to Engine 42. Mason County 17- Lilliwaup, Mason County 12 – Hoodsport, provided water tenders and manpower to fight the fire. Quilcene Fire Department also provided a tender. Mason 17 – Chief Joe smith took over water supply and provided a continuous flow of water to the numerous fire hoses attacking the fire. Mason PUD 1 was also on scene to secure power to the structure.

For those Firefighters trying to put out the fire and protect the cabinet shop time seemed to drag. But in reality only 42 minutes had elapsed from the time of the 911 call until the fire had been contained and extinguished. However, as with many structure fires the overhaul process and extinguishing of hot spots takes much more time. Mason – 17, Mason – 12 and Quilcene Fire were released at 8:00pm. The Brinnon Fire department remained on scene removing debris to access hotspots as well as commencing the fire investigation. Fire Chief Herbst called the fire out at 11:30pm and released the remaining Brinnon units. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time, the approximate loss value was estimated at $100,000.00

As if this was not enough the Brinnon Fire Department also responded to an ALS Aid call in the middle of firefighting operations.
